The Federal Republic of Nigeria represents an important political partner for Romania, but also his main business partner in Subsaharian Africa.
Romania is willing to get advantage of its new European and Euro-Atlantic status in order to multiply the bridges of dialogue and cooperation between Europe and Africa.
The new approach of the Romanian diplomacy of resuming and boosting the relations with the African countries. Romania considers Nigeria as one of the key – states in Subsaharian Africa.
This is a normal development after we are getting closer to finalizing the main strategic objective of the Romanian diplomacy after 1990, to reintegrate into the Euro-Atlantic family. We are now member of NATO and also member of the EU begining with 1st of January 2008.
We welcome the progresses recorded by the Federal Republic of Nigeria in consolidating democracy. The Yar'Adua’s team offers a guarantee for continuing these demarches in the benefit of the Nigerian people.
We value the bilateral political dialogue recorded in the last years, (the Nigerian Vice President, Vice Speaker, Ministers of Education, Communication, Defense, Industries, Internal Affairs, Transports, Water Resources, Power and Steel, National Intelligence Agency, Chief of Army Staff visits to Romania).
We believe that we have to intensify our contacts by establishing a framework for regular meetings, in order to develop our relations. Sharing the experience of the process of reform that the two countries are passing through could be an important field of cooperation.
Although in the last years we have witnessed a positive trend recorded in our trade exchanges, we believe that does not reflect the potential of our countries.
We are firmly convinced that there are still unexploited business opportunities between Romania and Nigeria. Therefore, we should encourage reciprocal visits of businessmen from one country to the other. Promoting the direct contacts between the Chambers of Trade and Industry, Vocational and Business Associations in the two countries could be an useful instrument in this regard.
Given the potential and the resources that Nigeria has, we are also looking to the possibility to use your country as a partner and a “bridge” for the Romanian exports to the whole Western African market. At the same time, Romania could be an advantageous market for the Nigerian products.
The readiness of Romania for relaunching the training and preparation of Nigerian specialists in our country, taking into account that in Abuja and Lagos there is a large number of those who studied in Romania.
We value the understanding existing between our countries for mutual support the candidatures to UN and other international bodies.
We support the initiatives launched by the African states aiming at eradicating poverty, erasing the external debts and giving the products of these countries an increased access to the markets of the developed countries.
